Community Integration and Cohesion

Community Integration and Cohesion is high on the EU agenda and on national government priority lists. We live in a society where the arbitrary barriers of race, faith, gender, class, disability, age and sexual orientation can affect opportunities, income, civil rights and health of an individual. Integration is about responding to differences within our local and national mix – making spaces and places for people from different backgrounds to interact and enabling both existing and new people to adapt and contribute to new circumstances. Cohesion is about how we ensure our complex and mixed society comes together on the basis of common values whilst celebrating diversity. Building community cohesion involves confronting fears and prejudices, counteracting intolerance, ignorance, prejudice and discrimination. Important actions in promoting integration and cohesion includes the need to create opportunities for different members of society to connect and interact to build knowledge, dispel fears and to ensure that the diversity of peoples backgrounds are appreciated and valued. The aim of the Community Integration and Cohesion (CIC) project is to produce a product that will confront fears, celebrate diversity and promote social integration and cohesion amongst adult learners. The project will develop and adapt an innovative DVD produced by Expanding Horizons, for use in other target countries. This will be done by examining the relevance of the case studies, translating those most relevant, adding additional case studies and producing course material/workbook to accompany the DVD. The objectives of the project are (1) To learn about and share experiences of tackling community integration and cohesion amongst partners, (2) To develop curriculum and learning materials which will include the innovative DVD featuring case studies from a variety of diverse groups and individuals e.g. a person who has experienced a mental illness, an asylum seeker, a deaf person, a young person from a BME community etc. (3) To ensure that the curriculum, learning materials and DVD are adapted by each partner to reflect the situation in their country. The DVD will use case studies from all the partner countries. (4) To develop and test the curriculum, learning materials and DVD, in close co-operation with the target group, in an iterative development process. The end product will be a DVD plus teacher/trainers manual and workbooks produced for each country participating in the project. All materials will be localised to reflect the situation in the participating countries and will published in the national languages of the partners, as well as in English. Partners cover a range of organisations e.g. public sector, research institutions, private sector consultants, training organisation and the voluntary sector. All partners have been involved previously in transnational projects and three partners have learned and worked together in the pas. Each partner will cont take the lead on a specific area of the work according to experience. Tangible outcomes will include the ability for (a) individuals to develop an understanding of needs and abilities of different social groups (b) individuals to challenge prejudice and stereotypical views and (c) individuals to be able to transfer that understanding into their work and communities. Use of the CIC product will support anti-discrimination legislation by creating opportunities for different members of society to connect and interact to build knowledge, dispel fears and to ensure that the diversity of people’s backgrounds are appreciated and valued. The CIC DVD and workbook will confronting fears and prejudices, counteracting intolerance, ignorance, prejudice and discrimination
