Communicating Science – Courses and Manuals for Teachers and Trainers

This project aims to address EUROPEAN PRIORITY 4: Skills development of adults in the labour market. Teachers of science and mathematics need re-training because of shrinking lesson hours and science media needs qualified mediators of results – thus, our project will cater for both needs in two countries. Science communication is a truly pan-European enterprise as one of the main objectives of the EU at present is to consolidate its role as a world leader in science and technology. The international knowledge building community of teachers and trainers we aim at setting up through our publications, workshops and portal will certainly be a motivating factor for teachers of science to enlarge professional competences and enrich their educational expertise with media skills. We also address Hungarian NATIONAL PRIORITY 1: Enhancement of competences of teachers and trainers – with special regard to their introduction to European best practice in an area related to their expertise (in our case: teaching of science). Even if they retain their jobs as teachers of science after their communication training, teachers will be more competent in methodology, for example in visualisation through the use of information and communication technologies for authentic rendering of scientific results. Enjoyable and inspiring classes in science may, on the other hand, play a key role in motivating the young to enter related professions.
