The overall aim of the BALTIC+ project was to form a permanent political platform for co-ordination and management of spatial development strategies and actions in a macro-region consisting of Skåne in Sweden, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Berlin and Brandenburg in Germany, and Western Pomerania in Poland. Agriculture and forestry, tourism, communication and infrastructure as well as promoting collaboration between urban and rural areas where the main topics covered by the project. Achievements: A strategy and action plan providing the foundation for future co-operation in the region was compiled in the final phase of the project.Five areas have been given priority in the plan: Promote integration, Develop sustainable tourism, Promote accessibility, infrastructure and knowledge, Support diversity and competence, and Promote capacity building. Many of the concrete actions were focusing on the theme tourism and rural development. For example, a practical guide was compiled for farmers who want to develop, expand or improve their educational and tourism activities. The handbook was designed like an instruction manual for practical action. It provides guidance on which steps should be undertaken and which aspects have to be taken into consideration in setting up economically viable agrotourism services. As the Baltic+ region contains many places connected to Vikings and Slavs, discussions about how to develop tourist products related to these groups were carried out. The activities also included study visits and production of a brochure. Another characteristic feature of the region is the many lighthouses along the coast of the Baltic Sea. An internet-based market survey showed that there is a considerable interest in developing these objects for tourist purposes. A website (www.leuchtturmtour.de) was therefore established. The website provides information on the lighthouses and offers related to accommodation and daytrips.Development and implementation of a joint information and booking system for tourism along a waterway from Berlin to Szczecin was another part of the tourist related project achievements. Some minor investments were made on three pilot sites visualising the information system.Baltic + has also dealt with new concepts and methods for organic farming and sustainable forestry. Practical examples of how traditional farming methods can be adapted to new demands were highlighted at seminars and study trips. The project also developed guidebooks on ecological farming and food production as well as for sustainable forestry. The guidebooks provide basic knowledge about the challenges of sustainable agriculture and forestry, and are targeted at SMEs in the region.Knowledge transfer over national borders about public transport was another important outcome. The project promoted investments in better regional infrastructure to unite the countryside with regional and local centres. Especially planning to improve rail links between Berlin and Szczecin was in focus. In Sweden, the concept of “Think Train – Drive Bus” was promoted.
