Background of the project: Historically, young people have faced social exclusion, and the recent economic downturn has prompted high unemployment which particularly affects the younger generation. However, some disadvantaged groups of young people face exclusion in the longer term for reasons beyond the current crisis. Remaining outside the global labour market has far-reaching consequences – not solely economic. These include a loss of confidence, undermining of trust and expectations, and an increasing risk of social exclusion and disengagement from society. Apart from the economic crisis there are other issues that affect youth and lead to political crisis. Global threats such as terroristic attacks and armed conflicts caused a huge refugee and migration wave to Europe. These and many other factors stipulate increasing of intolerance, xenophobia, violence, conflicts oriented by cultural fears, numerous stereotypes and prejudices, intercultural misunderstanding, inability to think critically and lack of intercultural competence in general. Tackling youth unemployment, social exclusion, intercultural communication and youth participation continues to be a policy priority for EU and national governments and the need to empower young people is increasingly recognized in this process. We see youth empowerment as an attitudinal, structural, and cultural process whereby young people gain the ability, authority, and active force to make decisions and bring change in their own lives and the lives of other people, including youth and adults. In other words, empowered young people will exercise power over one’s life by being skilled, critically aware, and active in creating community change.
The TC “Coaching for change” (January 29 – February 6, 2016 Yerevan, Armenia) aimed building competences in youth empowerment through coaching techniques.
Objectives:
A1. To know, use and adapt coaching methods and tools easily in their daily work;
A2.To strengthen the learning process by implementing the full coaching cycle: set goals, identify new possibilities, make decisions, take actions, and reflect;
A3. To provide the opportunity to assess the quality of the coaching process;
A4. To raise awareness of the entrepreneurial learning potential with coaching tools;
B1. To build a necessary set of competences for proficient use of non-formal education instruments and tools for youth empowerment at the local level;
B2. To build a necessary set of competences for proficient use of NFE instruments and tools for youth empowerment at the local level;
B3. To unite efforts of youth workers coming from formal and other youth field backgrounds for youth empowerment at the local level by using non-formal education;
C1. To work on personal and professional development in order to improve their and others’ employability prospects.
C2. To raise awareness of the entrepreneurial learning potential with coaching tools;
D1. To build a cross-sectorial network and create joint actions to address current challenges;
D2.To foster quality improvements in the youth work, in particular through enhanced cooperation between organisations in the youth field and other stakeholders.
Profile of participants: 33 participants - youth leaders, teachers, youth workers, staff of NGOs and active volunteers, from 11 countries. To ensure that participants applying for the project would be experienced and interested in multiplying effect the team of participants set an age limit, which was older than 20 years old.
Description of undertaken activities: Overall, the agenda followed the structure of the timetable presented at the stage of applying the project. It was further adjusted in order to accommodate questions/needs appearing, participants interests and their contributions. These changes were minor ones and the methods and the content that was planned were fully covered.
Results and impact attained: The main two results were:
- Competences developed by participants that will have impact on the participants’ knowledge, skills and attitudes in everyday youth work and voluntary activities.
- Inspirations and learning gained during the training course and the impact of it will be possible to see and may be measure (from quantitative point of view) through the number of follow-up initiatives and actions that we hope to monitor through Facebook group of the project.
Longer-term benefits: We expect long-term benefits on two levels:
- Impacts on organisations: To have capable and skilled members is the desire of each organisation as the organisation development depends on the capacity of the staff and members involved in the activities networking towards active citizenship across sectors on regional level.
- Benefit on the individual level: participants become more creative, full of initiative, self-confident and generally more efficient. In addition, competences gained during this training will raise their chance to help the youth to find suitable employment.
