Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is increasingly being used to enhance the learning of English. This teacher training course is designed for teachers to learn how to teach the content of their subjects in English.The aim of the course is to equip teachers in a very practical way in the following areas:- To refresh/improve their language skills, focusing on the language required to teach their subject(s) in English (key vocabulary for science teachers and classroom language for teaching science subjects)- To acquire ready made teaching materials and to evaluate, adapt and create materials for teaching their subject(s) in English - Participants will learn about assessment considerations- to acquire expertise and fresh ideas for teaching their subject in EnglishThe two participants of HBLA Ursprung, Edith Oberkofler and Erwin Gierzinger, are both science teachers in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, laboratory research, animal husbandry, organic farming. Both are very motivated teachers who always look for further development in terms of personal competences and knowledge, new teaching methodologies and improvement of students´ education and skills.Activities include:1. Workshops on Content and Language Integrated Learning (C.L.I.L.) Methodology: - brainstorming of concerns, issues and questions - principles of C.L.I.L./ ‘bilingual’ methodology - roles of language and curriculum content in C.L.I.L./ ‘bilingual’ pedagogy - sources, examples and potential uses of additional curriculum materials in English - introduction to practical examples of bilingual tasks from one curriculum theme- monolingual and bilingual textbook evaluation - assessment issues in C.L.I.L. - reading strategies for bilingual learners 2. A lecture on Secondary Education in England focusing on Science Discussion comparing the teaching of Science in the different European countries represented – curriculum, materials, methods, standards, assessment, national education policies etc. 3. Day visits to secondary schools (or Vocational Colleges) with the opportunity to observe lessons in Science4. English Language Training OUTCOMES: Participants will return with - ready-made materials for immediate use in class and sources for obtaining additional materials - lesson plans and topic plans - insights into how C.L.I.L. can be implemented and expanded in their school at all levels and with students of all abilities and language proficiencies By the end of the course participants will be able to: - define the relationship between content and language - construct tasks which combine curriculum content and new language - modify monolingual materials for use in bilingual classrooms - plan a series of bilingual lessons (C.L.I.L.) on one topic - provide learners with a range of learning strategies for bilingual learning BENEFITS: The expected benefits for the participating teachers comprises new inspiration and enthusiasm for teaching their subject(s), more effective teaching, different perspectives on teaching their subject(s), greater intercultural awareness and appreciation of attitudes and cultures of other European countries, greater knowledge of British and other European Education Systems and improvement of teachers’ English language skills.It is expected that all the above will result in more effective teaching by the participating teachers and their colleagues to the benefit of the whole school and pupils.Attending courses in the UK also provides teachers with opportunities to establish European school partnerships (with British schools and/ or the schools of other course participants).
