Through telling a story people get a chance to share their realities, daily challenges, problems and joys with the others. By using media tools - video, photography, audio - the people can share these small stories with their peers but also with wide publics, bringing attention to the topics that are usually hidden, showing unexpected perspectives and calling for action leading to a social change. "Citizen On" is an international training course for 24 youth workers and youth leaders from Czech republic, Turkey, Macedonia, Croatia, Italy, France and Latvia that took place in Brno, Czech republic from 15th to 24 April 2015.
During ten days the participants explored the principles and practices of citizen journalism and Backpack Journalism - a powerful tool of young people to share the inside stories from their communities and societies and through that influence and shape them.
The main aim of the training course was to explore methods of citizen journalism and Backpack Journalism as a tool in youth work, mainly in the communities of young people with fewer opportunities and to inspire and motivate the youth workers and youth leaders to use Backpack journalism in their local youth work.
During the project the participants had an opportunity to learn about the concept of Backpack and citizen journalism. With help of experienced mentors they tried to be a backpack citizen journalists themselves, they practiced interviewing people, finding out and telling their stories using various media tools. At the end they developed the competences necessary for mentoring other young people and helping them to analyze their own life stories through the lens of camera. One of the objectives of the training course was to create an international strategic partnership that will develop the methodology of backpack citizen journalism as a tool for other youth organizations interested in use of media in their local youth work.
The program included theoretical inputs and practical workshops, discussions, group processes and individual work. The approach developed participants’ skills, knowledge and attitudes towards the citizen journalism as a way to give young people a voice, develop their critical thinking and media literacy, to combat stereotypes and influence their social reality. The methods of non-formal education and experiential learning were used and the participants had a chance to develop their competences in learning-by-doing activities.
