CEF Professional – A Common European Framework of Reference for Professional Language and Communication Competencies

The main aim of the project is the elaboration of seven professional field-specific language proficiency profiles based on both the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEF) and specific needs analyses realised in different contexts of working life: technology, business, law, health and social care. The profiles, needing to be consistent with the different professional contexts, are: three for technology, two for business, one for law, one for health and social care. The specific meanings of the initiative are therefore: providing a tangible basis for curriculum planning for language teachers working with LSP (Language for Specific Purposes) or VOLL (Vocationally Oriented Language Learning) instructors; defining guidelines and procedures for tailor-made language courses in each profile; devising model courses; disseminating the proposed concepts and practical issues; filling the gap between, on one side, the CEF description of language skills focused on primary and secondary levels of basic education, and, on the other, the needed description of language skills in vocational and higher education. The main activities of the project include the development of a regularly updated website: among the different contents, it features the CEF professional profiles, and the guidelines for translating the language proficiency needs into made-to-measure language courses. On the same website, from February 2006 on, the information on outcomes and results of piloting phases are given.
