PROJET
TERMINÉ
The main functions of excellence are performed by the historical centres and their heritage, where the Euro-Mediterranean culture and knowledge are concentrated. An innovating, dynamic approach is adopted to increase the cities’ attractiveness, so as to enhance competences and favour the inclusion of different social groups. The cultural heritage of the Mediterranean territories, their traditions, history and culture, are very important factors leading to a major economic development process. This heritage is often neglected or is not sufficiently protected against the elements leading to its degradation and ruin. In this context, the UNESCO Cities enable an interdisciplinary approach based on an integrated management and on recognising the added value of pursuing the goal of revitalising the urban texture of historical centres by means of innovating actions aimed at enhancing the cultural heritage in a diversified environment with a few common challenges. The project (CULTURE Cités Unesco Laboratoires de Territoires URbains) thus aims at identifying and sharing transnational governance methods by developing a common strategy for an integrated local development aimed at managing historical city centres by valorization of cultural heritage through the sharing and implementing a transnational action plan, innovating cultural activities and services to increase the economic attractiveness of the historical city centres involved. Achievements: State of the art of project implementation since the project startCULTURE project has carried out an overall analysis of the management of the historical centres by taking into account: the governance system, the sustainable management of the historical heritage through the involvement of the private sector, the involvement of the population. The analysis, exchange of knowledge and practices and the develpment of common activities in these fields revealed that despite the differences, all the Mediterranean towns share similar problems in terms of level of development of multilevel governance systems. As far as the sustainable management is concerned, the activities related to the production of the handbook for the sustainable management allowed the partners to get in touch with innovative technologies to be applied to private buildings and with funding mechanisms that could be applied. Very good results have been achieved in terms of involvement of young people through open calls collecting ideas and visions for the future of historical towns.Latest project activities and outputsDuring the last six months, the following activities have been completed: - organisation of the project meeting in Pisa in November 2011 - organisation of the final conference, held in Pisa in April 19 and 20 - organisation of the exposition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Pisa (SMS) on CULTURE identity merchansing and projects and ideas awarded through the public call - production of the final CD collecting all the project outputs - production of the final DVD on CULTURE historical urban centres a trip through water and stones - final delivery of the CULTURE geoblog - publishing of the white book Young People for Site - dissemination of the newsletter n.3 and drafting and dissemination of the newsletter n.4 - editing and printing of the final brochure - drafting of the report describing the project activities and resultsNext key steps for the projectThe project has come to and end.
