Broadening access to learning, training and employment for deaf and disabled people

This project will provide deaf people with the skills to access education, training and work by acquiring 'new generation' skills in IT, communication and language, and to give them greater control of their learning environment. This project will address the disadvantages faced by deaf people in widening access to training and education. This proposal is derived from the needs of deaf people in education and training identified in the Leonardo I proposal: Preparing deaf students for higher education and professional training. One of the key functions of this project is to develop delivery methods that enable students 'any time, any place' to access preparation and skill courses, and to use on line and distance methods that can deliver new programmes and improved access to existing ones. The specific products that will be developed by project partners are: ° A tested model for presenting existing training courses and new modules on line, or through open distance learning/teaching.Programmes to promote access and education to training, comprising a preparation module developing study skills, including skills in effective use of IT; a support module aimed at developing reading comprehension with signs, using computer-based learning support software and a language module; developing and piloting an educational and interpreting module, as training both for hearing and deaf people learning to access and manage peer support systems. The project is designed to promote continuous dissemination and consultation, both between the partners and between regional and national sectors and networks. Each partner country will convene a series of workshops to include users, participating partners, social agencies, employers and trainers. There will also be three national conferences, one in each of the participating countries, to promote its products for national training and the education sectors.
