The association “Internationales FilmFest Braunschweig e.V.” plans to organise and carry out the 30th annual Braunschweig International Film Festival (BIFF) running from November 8-13th, 2016. The festival aims at presenting about 195 short as well as feature length films from around 26 countries of which the majority will have a premiere status at the time of their screening. With its focus on young European Cinema, an estimated 80% of the films screened will thereby have a European production context or origin.The festival’s main focuses is on young European cinema and “film & music” as its trademarks and is open to all genres. In the course of the festival week, the BIFF awards six prizes worth 43.000 Euro in total, the most important being the actor’s award “Europa” for excellence in performance and contributions to European film culture while the other awards include “The Heinrich”, for the best European debut or second feature film, as well as the French-German youth award “KINEMA”, and three new “Lion” awards: “Green Lion” for the best film of the Green Horizon section on sustainability, the “White Lion” for the best European film music of a festival film, and the “Black Lion” for the best film of the “Beyond” section, reflecting Braunschweig as the self-proclaimed “Lion City” in honor of the city founder Heinrich, the lion.The programme will feature sections on new German and new International cinema, several short film programmes and with the special section “War on Everyone” in the latter also seek to contribute to a larger current cultural context. Another programme section titled “Green Horizons” is aimed at films with an emphasis on sustainability. The “film & music” section will pay homage to a composer who will also be one of the festival’s star guests and serve as a main crowd puller. Several events within the programme will then be dedicated to the industry such as the BIFF industry talks.
