The project entitled “Boguchwała as a local centre of bilingual education” is a part of the European Development Plan of The Secondary School with Bilingual Departments in Boguchwała, being one of the few schools in the Subcarpathia region aiming at bilingual education of several subjects. Therefore, its basic need is to increase teachers skills and qualifications regarding bilingual education, since the school’s objective is specified by an innovative approach towards teaching, let alone developing language competence, using English in teaching science and art subjects, promoting foreign languages, and initiating international model of education. Consequently, it is of high importance to enable the teachers to familiarise themselves with new methods and techniques to apply in teaching students at the European level, not to mention the bilingual teacher experience exchange. Enhanced attractiveness of the lessons will then lead to the following: students’ growing interest in classes, their greater engagement and participation in learning, increased attendance rate, and finally, higher motivation for studying and achieving better results. Moreover, the project focuses also on the school’s plan to develop international cooperation and gain new international partners, so as to enable both students exchange with other countries and teacher trainings abroad.
All teachers engaged in the project will take part in two-week courses conducted by well-known professional teachers training schools in the United Kingdom. The types of courses will be adjusted to the teachers’ needs, who are divided into four groups. The first one consists of four subject teachers, qualified to teach their subjects bilingually, namely geography, natural science, business basics, biology, cultural studies, and information technology. Although they are qualified to conduct their subjects bilingually, they undertook this approach in September 2013, thus they require additional support in order to increase their language skills and qualifications in bilingual teaching, including methodology. The participants will, therefore, initially attend a language course (Intensive General English), and, only afterwards, CLIL Methodology course (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and Bi-Component course, allowing the teachers to observe their subject lessons carried out in a British school. The second group comprises four teachers preparing themselves to bilingual teaching mostly by learning English intensively. First of all, they will participate in a language course, so as to be more confident to attend CLIL Methodology course. Subsequent group includes foreign language teachers stressing the need for enriching both their language and methodological skills. Therefore, three English teachers will take part in EFL Methodology in Practice course, and one German teacher will observe German lessons in English teaching environment. Additionally, one more teacher will partake in Learning to Learn course, which aims at educating teachers on motivating students to individual work and learning.
All the above-mentioned courses will increase the teachers’ qualifications and indicate the European importance of the school, setting high standards of teaching English, and incorporating new methods and techniques (including the use of various media) of bilingual education. It will enhance the school’s competitiveness on the education market, creating a modern student-friendly European secondary school proud of attractive and innovative offer of bilingual education with the access to international cooperation, enabling the exchange of experience and developing tolerance towards other cultures and traditions. Not only does international cooperation act as an incentive to take up new projects and start students’ exchange, but it also offers excellent prospects of students’ education abroad.
It is vital teachers broaden their professional knowledge and gain new experience, as it facilitates the future long-term development of the school, enabling the expanded educational offer with the choice the International BaccalaureateDiplomaProgramme.
