Boating culture (Skutkultur)

Skutföreningen Kustkultur in Finland - Suomen Perinnepurjelaivat was founded in thefall of 2002 in order to develop and improve conditions for commercial use of traditionalsailing ships and to find new activities for this floating cultural heritage. The aim of theproject was to improve conditions for the use of sailing ships in Finland and Åland. Newbusiness models and activities were needed to secure the future of the traditional sailingships and continue the development of their use. After 31.12.2005, emphasis was shifted tocultural aspects, while marketing was subordinated.The main point was to increase awareness about boating culture, the archipelago andthe situation of the boats in our modern society. Another of the projects goals was toprevent the sale of the boats to foreign countries, and thusly retain the culture in Finland,Sweden and Åland. One also desired to engage youngsters, decision-makers and thegeneral public in boating culture as a pleasant pastime. The project was also aimed atdeveloping new products and new forms of participation within the boating culture fordifferent target group.
