Red Cross organisations, blood transfusion centres, promotion and recruitment organisations), in order to arrange an adequate policiy context and,at the same time, to support sanitary structures and NGOs to reach high performance levels with regard to the blood donation. IThe project will involve in all the partner countries collection of information regarding the blood donation issues, communication and training activities, analysis of methods and approaches in the promotion activities and management of Voluntary Non Remunerated Blood Donors (VNRBDs), as well as "health promotion” in general. The project will also produce printed and digital materials targeting the professionals that operate this field. In the transfusion system of some European countries different local policies assign different functions to the public health system and to the NGOs. These ones in Italy dedicate themselves mainly to the promotion of the culture of blood donation, finding donors and make them faithful, being on the lookout for the correct use of blood whereas the health service look after the transfusion services. In other countries every activity is carried out by the public system, in a lot of Soviet influenced countries all the services are delegated to Red Cross. The involvement of four countries in the BESSY project having different schemes in the management of the blood donation issues will permit to analyse various approaches and investigate on their efficiency and eventual improvement in order to obtain optimal model/s (social and economic) that allow to increase the values of blood social capital and contribute to the blood safety of the donors moving throughout Europe in particular in cross-border territories. Innovative aspects of the project are rappresented by: the experimentation of a Donor Card, the implementation of common promotional campaign, the costitution of the Know How and Expertise Center and Network and the creation of the Competence Network that will provide the recommendations and support to the national and regional governments in the field of blood donation issues. A very important aspect of the BESSY project is that it aims at investigating on the production of “social capital” - standing for a resource that characterizes the social relations network and defines the local communities life. Particular attention will be paid to the identification of best procedures in order to assure the maximum involvement in the initiative of different stakeholders and in the continuation of the foreseen activities even after the conclusion of the project assuring in this way the project sustainability. .
