„Begegnungen – Theater verbindet“ is a theater project for German and Romanian youth. The aims of the project are the development of mutual understanding and tolerance as well as the strengthening of the own personality. Furthermore the youth will get to know a foreign country and its culture. Many people living in our region have prejudices and a false impression of Rumania. This project should help to break down such prejudices, which are also intensified by recent articles about Romanies in Germany. Eleven Romanian and eighteen German teenagers take part in this project. Most of the young people come from rural environment and partly from low-income backgrounds. The youth having their own cultural and social background will meet by means of playfully arranged workshops. They will develop and perform a play under guidance. The young people will talk about historical, cultural and social topics. The play “Begegnungen” which was worked out last year will be expanded by creating new scenes using the gained knowledge and improvisational theatre. There will be two performances in Luckau and one in Potsdam in the end of the theatre week. We expect about 300 visitors. Next to the theater workshops we will explore the Spreewald together. Furthermore trips to Berlin and Potsdam are planned in order to show the Romanian visitors more about our country. Getting to know a foreign culture and working together help to develop respect for each other’s work and bring the attendees closer together. We have deliberately decided to do this kind of project. The young people have to be active and can use their individual capabilities and properties instead of just consuming. A variety of capabilities is important because this project needs more than actors and musicians. Makeup artists, technicians and organizer are essential as well. Therefore each person can apply oneself according to their individual properties. Furthermore the youth can process their knowledge, experiences and ideas in the play. The Romanian youth will improve their German during this week. The language of communication will be German furthermore the produced play will be performed in German. Some of the Romanian teenagers want to do their education in Germany after their graduation because the German dual education system is very attractive for them. All activities are filmed. This film material will be applied for a documentary about this project. The German attendees will report their experiences about the project in their classes or youth clubs. They will help to change possible false impressions of the EU country Romania. The Romanian will do the same in their country. During that project the youth from both countries recognize that there are social and cultural differences. However they also realize that those differences are not that significant than expected. The diverse experiences should strengthen the understanding and openness for Romania, being a country that becomes more important in the European job market.
