Physical Education or Sports Education?
Throughout childhood and adolescence physical education gives chance for practicing and skill acquisition that provide opportunity to be in fine feather for lifelong. Gaining of these basic skills
in early period provide that young individuals understand better the value of these activities in
progressive periods or do these activities in their spare times of their adulthood. However physical
education do not limited to only physical skills. There are other extents a recreation extant of
physical education like attending to physical activities, rules of game, fair play respect tactics, and
physical awareness. So, this produces sporting concept.
Gains of requirement that physical education and sports like health, healthy personality development and social participation, increase the significant of inclusion to curriculum in schools of these social values of physical education and sport have a place in Europe.
Sports provide social solidarity and union. In universal value of sports, there is an approach that
put forward fraternity, not sorting people in society. Sports contribute significantly to creating democratic society. Sports make people sociable and play an important role in building and improving relationships.
In recent years, sports has obtained an considerable footing also for tourism that an important constituent of modern community life so all these reasons indicate that sports takes an important place in our life and necessary for society.
It is supposed to be accepted being prudential of conscious and healthy sports education for developing of such an important sports and making achievements to conscious and perpetual situation, but incidental and ephemerae.
12-24 age groups the young population is constituted by %16.6 of Turkey population, and this rate is the youngest population of Europe. However %14.8 of the young are overweight, %3.8 of them are obese, %8.6 of them drink alcohol and the rates of internet usage is %67. Sports education is extremely necessary about improving these negative statistics. Naturally, necessity of young population to sports is very high. However the rate of going to the gym is %4 of total population when the rate is %69 in ABD, %34 in Germany, %27 in France and %14 England. Despite being high population who work out as registered in our country and increasing interest of people to sports every passing year, it is seen that active participation to sport is at low level when the data obtained is compared with European countries.
One of the root causes of being low population who work out our country is policies about shown success in international sports organizations and numbers of winning medals instead of spreading sports in social base. This situation cause that calling attention to competition sports so that doing plans for saving the day instead of doing long term plans and specific programs which spread sports to the base.
In the front commission report of 1999 Sports Council, the vision that is “Activities which are done for entertainment, health are not considered.” confirms this.
In that case, policies for dissemination of sports that according to the no 59 articles consisting of sports development of constitution.
At this point, particularly The Ministry of Public Education (Sports High Schools), all of state institutions and organizations have major tasks and responsibilities.
Corresponding policies about sports management have to be revised. It is not mentioned about development of sports in countries without a good sports management and education.
It is needed to be viewing practices in European Union’s Countries about the key issues like teacher selection, student selection, curriculum and more technological an systematical charting out to the sports education with the done which will be acquired.
From small ages, sports education and culture have to be given by professional instructors.
The importance of sports in schools has to be increased. There are instructors in different branch of sports besides physical education teachers in schools. Many students should be referred to a sports activity in line with their field of interest, will and ability.
Everybody cannot go to the gym in sports club but everybody can be in school environment. Schools are the places like beaten path.
All of these are emphasize to seriousness and consideration of sports education. However growing more professional, planned, invested in future, continuous, not daily sportsmen pass by healthy sports education.
