The goal for the Baltic SeaBreeze (BSB) project was to increase awareness of the marine pollution situation in the target sectors of fishing, shipping, and leisure craft owners. Focus areas have been environmental issues in guest harbours and marinas, Blue Flag activities, courses for fishermen and seamen, and a media campaign. The ultimate goal of Baltic SeaBreeze was to change the attitudes and behaviour among the target groups to reduce marine pollution. In the Baltic SeaBreeze Project, 34 partners were involved from Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Norway and Russia. Lead Partner of the project was the Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation. The project secretariat was situated in Stockholm, Sweden. The Baltic SeaBreeze project was designated as one of Baltic 21’s “Lighthouse Projects”.Baltic SeaBreeze had three work packages; Marine Strategic Partnership, Media/Communication Strategy and Fishing/Shipping Network. These three work packages targeted specific areas but interacted and cooperated for educating and raising the awareness in the projects target groups and applying a media strategy. Another important actor in BSB was the international multi-stakeholder reference group with target group representatives. Achievements: Efforts on achieving higher awareness were carried out with hands-on activities that underlined the effects of marine pollution to the marine eco-systems. BSB arranged transnational activities such as a common Marina Handbook available in 7 languages for better standards among guest harbours/marinas. The Marina Handbook have strengthened the network and helped to achieve common understanding and exchange of information and experience, both between marinas and partners. BSB promoted Best Practice guest harbours/marinas, produced uniform training materials and a public awareness campaign. 2 pilot studies on environmental petrol and boat washes were carried out. A survey on media’s environmental attitudes was done to form the basis for the media strategy plan made by WP2, and implemented for entire project. Marine Awareness Courses for cadets, sailors and fishermen held in Sweden in 2006 and in Lithuania in 2007.Project film produced and distributed via all partners to target groups, different kind of media as well as local, national and EU politicians. Project Final results brochure created and disseminated to relevant stakeholders.
