TERMINÉ
The project ‛Auszubildende in England: Leben, Arbeiten und Lernen’ (Trainees in England: Life, work and education) is conducted by Carl Helbing School, Emmendingen in co-operation with Tellus Group Ltd. in Plymouth. It is open to commercial apprentices in the vocational fields of wholesale and foreign trade, industry, office management, banking and health, who are enrolled in Carl Helbing School. They attend compulsory English classes in school and aim for the ‛KMK’ certificate. They are predominantly placed with local businesses with international connections. Therefore, proficiency in English is indispensable for their success in their apprenticeships as well as in school.
Attaining or consolidating, as the case may be, proficiency in a foreign language is a self-evident reason for going abroad. Nowhere can a language be learned with greater efficiency than where it is actually spoken. For this reason, we enable our apprentices to participate in the Erasmus+ programme. They apply for the available places handing in their ‛Europass’ cv, as well as a motivational letter in German and English, respectively. Following the selection of participants by the school, they attend an intercultural preparatory workshop, during which they have a chance to get to know each other and receive all relevant information on their stay in England. Organizational matters, such as transfer arrangements to and from the airports, necessary insurances and means of payment are settled and the requirements of the learning contracts are explained.
The participants fly to London together and are then transferred to Plymouth and their host families by our local partner organization. They are quartered half-board in twin rooms. They spend four weeks in Plymouth. First, they attend an intensive one-week language training in order to prepare them for the subsequent three-week placement. There, following a brief familiarization, they are involved in the daily routines and may perform duties such as telephoning, e-mail correspondence, customer support or sales, thereby getting to know different departments, like purchasing and sales, bookkeeping, marketing and logistics as they are organized in foreign companies, and gain new insights into alternative methods and procedures, while at the same time increasing their language proficiency.
Week-end excursions in and around Plymouth, organized and conducted by Tellus Group, complement the programme and give the participants the opportunity to further their knowledge and appreciation of life in England.
After a successful completion of the project, the apprentices receive the ‛Europass Mobility’. This will increase their chances in the national, as well as international labour markets. Through Erasmus+ projects, we also aim to improve the quality of our education and hope to facilitate excellent results in our pupils’ final examinations. From the evaluation and propagation of their experiences in the project, we hope to gain prestige for our school. The preparation of a well-qualified skilled work force is essential for the success of the local, and by implication the international economy, particularly in view of global future demands in the labour market. For this reason, we are eager to continue offering voluntary placements abroad in the future.
