The HLW Horn – Higher Commercial College for Occupations in Service Industries – Vocational School for Commercial Jobs – trains its students in the fields of kitchen and service among other subjects. At the end of the fourth year there is the so-called pre-exam in kitchen and service which is a prerequisite to be admitted to graduate at the end of the fifth year. Therefore the students have to do their compulsory 12-week internship between the third and the fourth year in order to consolidate and extend their competence in this field. As part of the internship abroad the students should gain intercultural experiences in other countries and get to know international businesses. The interns are expected to complete a training programme of 8 hours daily in various business domains like kitchen, service, reception, etage- storey or management. Furthermore they are supposed to gain profound insight into the companies as well as consolidate and extend their competence and skill in these domains. Moreover it is one of the school’s main concerns to promote sustainable cooperation between educational institutions and enterprises in economy, tourism and the food service industry at international level. After their third year this summer 7 students of the HLW Horn are going to take their 12-week internship in kitchen and service abroad. The following partner companies are going to be part of the project: A: lead partner: Higher Commercial College for Occupations in Service Industries Horn The students are expected to write a detailed report about their internship in the form of an “internship-folder”. These results are used to advertise for the next internships abroad and should motivate the students of the following years to search for a placement abroad. B: partner companies: 1) Kurhaus Juist, Strandpromenade 1, D-26571 Juist (3 pupils) 2) Grand Hotel Seeschlösschen, Strandallee 14, D-23669 Timmendorfer Strand (2 pupils) 3) Remeslo Thermál s.r.ol., 249, 96602 Vyhne, Slowakei (1 pupil) 4) Catering Speckmobile Franz Schinagl, 1 Thornburn Square, London, England (1 pupil) Mid/end of September 2014: end of mobility phase. Beginning of October 2014: end report of interns in form of an “internship-folder”. End of October 2014: The students have to present and give insight into their internship abroad at an information evening for parents of the third classes (the evening is meant to inform the parents about the internships), at the “Open Day” of the HLW and at the “Night of the HLWs”. The content of the “internship-folder”: • Internship contract • Employer’s reference letter, certificate of the internship • Introduction of company, description of town and region • Activities report (record of working hours, breaks and rosters) • Personal experience and impressions • Curriculum Vitae, diary of the work • There is some attestation in the graduation certificate when and where the internship took place. The content of the “internship-folder” is controlled by the Fachvorstand director of the nutrition department and is one part of the mark at the end of the semester of the subject “cooking and serving”. A specific assessment scale is used for that (all the forms available, layout, compliance to deadline). Main target of the internship: Implementation of skills and competences acquired at school into the job reality. The students obtain profound insight into the organisation of the companies. Because of their synopsis of experiences at school and at the internships they can gain a positive attitude towards working life in general as well as towards the specific work-related context in particular. The partner companies are obliged to let the students perform tasks that contribute to their professional education. Target at an international level: Promotion and intensification of international cooperation with the partner companies, extension of the students’ cultural horizon. These partner companies should be available for subsequent interns, and there is the possibility of our graduates to work there later on. This year the HLW Horn has applied for mobility projects already for the fourth time and thus enables students to work abroad. More public relations activities and an enlarged information of students let the number of people who would like to participate in an Erasmus+ project rise to seven. Such projects are extremely important concerning a positive image in public, increase and strengthen our relationships with companies abroad and give our students the chance to live in a foreign environment for a longer period of time. Due to financial straits this would not be possible for many young people without Erasmus+. Equal opportunities for all students are of upmost importance. Furthermore their stay abroad will be an important part of the students’ curricula vitae.
