PROJET
TERMINÉ
The Archaeological Atlas of the 2 Seas project aims to map the available underwater data for the two seas. The first step will merge French, British and Flemish data to create a comprehensive underwater archaeological landscape, which will include the location of known shipwrecks, contextual data and legal and regulatory information. Thanks to this, the project team will be able to determine zones of major interest where they will organize archaeological surveys alternating between the coasts of each partner. An international team will ensure that the new expertise is shared between partners. The information will be organised into a database linked to a GIS system, which will be constructed during the project and put online. This will be accessible to the different partners involved, and also to heritage managers (marine aggregate extraction, windfarms, managing wrecks with hazardous cargoes…) as well as to researchers, students and the public at large. Expected Results: What are the key results of the project? The main result of activity 1 is the collection of a large amount of data concerning the submerged archaeological sites in the three countries. From all the research we will undertake, there will be a consolidation/summary exercise that will be published through the A2S GIS. There will also be validation of the data by the national archaeological authority.Activity 2 will create or improve the partners’ databases, which will be the core of the A2S GIS. We will integrate the data into the partners’ databases in order to achieve a common GIS that will result in the specification of the A2S GIS. The main visible result will be the publication of the partner’s database through the A2S GIS.Activity 3 will result in the publication of new data through reports and the A2S GIS. Moreover there will be the creation of a European underwater archaeologists team including scientists from universities and volunteers. The fieldwork will also produce photos and video coverage that will be used in the communication of the project. .Are all partners and territories benefitting from the results? The creation of an Archaeological Atlas of the 2 Seas is intended to place the protection of underwater cultural heritage at the heart of Integrated Coastal Zones Management (ICZM). To this end, one of the target groups will be the managers maritime zones, environmental agencies, as well as heritage management and other public national management bodies. Those groups will benefit directly from the project as a promotion tool of our underwater cultural heritage toward the public, but also scientists. Most of the content of the A2S concerns the scientific community in general and more precisely researchers in Maritime Archaeology and History, university students, etc. These groups and individuals will be involved in the creation of the A2S GIS and partners’databases through the data they bring to the project and ultimately will be its beneficiaries as users of the A2S GIS once it is published. Indeed this tool is aimed at research, comparative studies, and cartography. It can be used in university up to post-graduate research. The publication of the data on the internet will ensure public access to an important part of their maritime heritage. Thus it will be the general public who will be the final beneficiary of the Archaeological Atlas of the 2 Seas. Finally the partners will benefit of the project throughout the activities, by having more information gathered on underwater archaeological sites, being able to survey the sites and results at an European level. What are the effects / outcomes for the territories involved? Each activity has clear outcomes for the territories. Activity 1 by the data collected will improve the understanding of the national archaeological authorities of their national heritage by collection new data of enhancing a known dataset by a deeper research. Activity 3 will give the opportunity for the territories to see their coastal research for underwater cultural heritage by a team of professional archaeologists that will publish their work at different level and will use those fieldwork operation to share their passion to the public by presenting their work locally. The Education & Outreach work is closely link to the territories by teaching pupils, through an archaeological lens, the importance and the historical value of the heritage beneath the Channel and the North Sea, linking our project in present days issues of teaching social sciences and promoting a sense of belonging. The communication also will serve this purpose of promoting our heritage.
