Backa Topola and Kelebija started their cooperation 5 years ago, and in 2009 Kelebija and Bajsa, one of the settlements of Backa Topola municipality, signed a memorandum of understanding, which defines strengthening, expanding and strategic development of parnership relations through: sport tournaments, cultural exchange, cooperation between the institutions, exchange of youth programs and joint participation at national and international calls for proposals. This project is an opportunity to upgrade the cross-border cooperation because it would solve a problem identified by both partners - a need for better connections in the bordering area. This is directly linked to the overall aim of the Program which is facilitation of the development of a harmonic and cooperating region with a sustainable and safe environment. This project is also in line with specific objective: reducing isolation of border areas by improving cross-border accessibility. Project activities are: construction of cycling paths and parking space for bicycles, installation of signalization, printing maps and information booklets with bus and train schedules, project management, public procurement and PR and project marketing. Project locations are settlements of Backa Topola and Kelebija, duration is October2012 to September 2013. Target groups are all citizens of Kelebija in Hungary and of settlements of Backa Topola and Bajsa in Serbia. Expected outputs are betterconnection in bordering area where accessibility of major urban centers is particularly difficult. In addition to the construction works, the project partners published maps for cyclists and prospective users of the bike lanes. Information booklets with bus and train schedules are especially useful for people who would like to or need to combine public transport and cycling. For that reason, for example in Kelebia, the bike path starts from the train station where international trains stop, such as the Budapest-Belgrade railway line. The maps and booklets enable and promote safe and environmentally friendly travel between the two countries.
