Nowadays a current topic is the concept of integrative and inclusive education. Salacgriva Secondary School is not an exception, it is considering the adjustment of learning process to support pupils with special needs; therefore the school has licensed two special education programs. At the moment there are 36 pupils with different learning disabilities and mental retardation in the special education programs. Moreover, in every class there are pupils who acquire the general comprehensive education, but who need special support prescribed by a psychologist or a doctor. As every pupil’s special needs are very different, teachers need great knowledge and skills how to deal with these pupils, how to develop and provide supporting arrangements during the learning process to include these pupils in the system of general comprehensive school. This knowledge has still to be improved.
One of the most difficult subjects at school for pupils with special needs is foreign languages. Therefore Salacgriva Secondary School is planning to send one of the English teachers, who is responsible for organizing the process of special education at school, to "2 WEEK COURSES FOR EUROPEAN TEACHERS OF ENGLISH TO PUPILS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS" from 29.09.2014 to 12.10.2014 in Portsmouth, England organized by International Study Programmes (ISP) in UK. In order to accomplish this goal the school has decided to participate in the project of Erasmus + Learning Mobility for Individuals under the project title "The Improvement of Supporting Arrangements for Pupils with Special Needs”. The content of the courses supports the main aims of Salacgriva Secondary School:
1) Special Needs;
2) Inclusion - Equity;
3) Teaching and Learning of Foreign Languages.
Expected impact of the participating teacher:
• new inspiration and enthusiasm for teaching English to pupils with special needs;
• greater ability to develop supporting arrangements for pupils with special needs not only in English lessons but in other subjects as well by consulting the colleagues;
• greater perspectives on teaching English;
• improvement of teacher’s practical skills and the knowledge of the methodology of English as a foreign language for pupils with special needs;
• competence in developing individual learning and behavior plans to implement it in real life at school;
• improvement of knowledge and experience of pedagogical diagnostics to duly notice pupils who have special needs;
• the educating of parents who have pupils with special needs to improve the cooperation between the school and parents;
• greater intercultural awareness and appreciation of attitude towards special education and practice in UK and other European countries;
• cooperation possibilities with teachers from other European countries and schools to improve the work of special education at own school;
• improvement of teacher’s English language skills;
• greater understanding of the significance of inclusive education.
The main beneficiaries of the project would be pupils of special education programs as well as those of general comprehensive education programs who have special needs. The learning process of these pupils could be facilitated by developing and improving individual supporting arrangements, creating methodological aids (worksheets, educational games, interactive materials, different multisensory activities).
Another target group would be the teachers of Salacgriva Secondary School, who would gain from informative seminars and workshops, organized by the participant of the courses, to improve their knowledge and skills in educating pupils with special needs, highlighting the skills of developing supporting arrangements. There is a plan to supplement the methodological materials in the teachers’ room, for instance, by developing the folders “Reminders for pupils”,“Support for teachers of special education programs pupils”. Moreover, the teacher who would have attended the ISP course, would be able to consult the teachers regularly, as the participant teacher’s knowledge and experience in Salacgriva region, it is planned to organize seminars for the teachers of all schools in the region.
To spread the information among Salacgriva Secondary School as well as other regional schools teachers and parents, the participant teacher intends to write different articles about special education in the home-page of the school.
The exchange of experience is possible not only in Latvia but also internationally, as one of the tasks during the course is to prepare the presentation about the special education in native country and in one’s school. Moreover, it can be followed-up after the course by sharing the ideas in different internet forums, blogs and web-sites, which are often used by the participant teacher.
To asses weather the project has reached its objectives a regular monitoring of pupils’ achievements is going to be carried out, as well as the inquiry of the teachers and parents.
