ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY LEARNING THROUGH A UNIFIED CURRICULUM

One of the major barriers to access the (regular) labour market for people with disabilities (PwDs) is their (lack of) knowledge of ICT AT (assistive technologies). Research from FP7 funded projects such as AEGIS and ACCESSIBLE have demonstrated the inefficiency of current ICT AT training approaches, as well as the often total lack of such training. Databases such as Eneva, Eve, Adam etc. do contain references to initiatives, however they are currently under-used nor efficient. This project will address the gap in ICT AT support and counter the lack of skills in terms of ICT competencies by the creation of an AT curriculum that aims at providing ICT AT training to learners interested in gaining or sustaining their employment, where they are equally informed on what AT is available (see linkage to EASTIN) to support them in their daily working activities. ATLEC will also create a curriculum that will take onboard the individual needs for PwDs, their employability needs and perspectives and which will be also adjusted to local circumstances. ATLEC will focus on training the learners (PwDs) in specific skills thus qualifying them to become trainers in this and associated AT ones and also creating a new upgraded specific job profile of ICT AT trainer. Learning will be offered in a blended approach: through F2F training, (either individual or in group) as well as via online learning through a fully accessible WCAG2.0 compliant multilingual platform. The AT curriculum will combine existing popular IT trainings in conjunction with specific ICT AT training by interactive methods such as video tutorials. To foster the integration of learning with working life DN will set –up (e)mentoring schemes as part of the learning conducive environments at the workplace, thus providing the learners with work-placed training and apprenticeship pathways as a basis for development of vocational skills relevant to the labour market needs.
