Assessing subsurface potentials of the Alpine Fore.. (GeoMol)
Assessing subsurface potentials of the Alpine Foreland Basins for sustainable planning and use of natural resources
Date du début: 30 sept. 2012,
Date de fin: 29 juin 2015
To meet the EU’s ambitious targets for carbon emission reduction, renewable energy production must strongly be upgraded and made more efficient and capable for grid energy storage. Alpine Foreland Basins feature a unique geological inventory which can contribute substantially to tackle these challenges. Deep ‘Molasse’ basins at the fringe of the Alpine mountain range offer an abundant geothermal potential and storage capacity for weather-dependent wind and solar energy, as well as space for underground storage of gas or CO2. Exploiting these natural subsurface resources (geo-potentials) will strongly compete with existing oil and gas claims and groundwater issues. Thus, the efficient use and sustainable management of geo-potentials requires a holistic and transnational approach. In order to serve transnational decision-making, GeoMol will provide consistent 3-dimensional subsurface information based on coherent evaluation methods and commonly developed criteria and guidelines. Achievements: The application for the budget extension of Italian partners was approved by the Programme Committee. The partnership was further consolidated, publication rules were ratified and the organisation & promotion of Brussels Info Day took place. The GeoMol website was upgraded, project flyers translated and banner displays completed. Several meetings supported workflows e.g. a common best practice workflow was established & customised to the specific needs of the Partners. Methods of transnational harmonisation and workflows were presented to the scientific community and the interpretation of processed data advanced. The translation, dissemination and a fist analyses of a Stakholder Survey was performed. By literature research up-to-date methods in geopotential assessment could be found as well as further implementations for GeoMol’s geodata infrastructure.
