Art in Action: How can art have a positive impact in social issues?

“Art in Action” project was implemented between 9 - 15 October, 2015 in Guimaraes, Portugal. The Youth Exchange project, Art in Action was carried out with 30 participants from 6 different countries, including the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Italy and Turkey. Bringing together these young creative people, the Art in Action project aimed at exploring and understanding certain problems, such as, social differences, issues related with integration, poverty, environment and create awareness of the personal impact that those young people can have as key actors in their own local communities. The main objective of the project was to raise awareness of young people thus they could feel and understand certain social issues present in Guimaraes, Portugal and find means to tackle them and have a positive impact. For that purpose participants were given choice to choose the thematic that they were interested in and use creative tools. This attitude was deployed in order to inspire participants act in their own ways which would eventually allow them to act and solve social issues in their respective communities. In order to create a comfortable working environment for project participants various ways of self expression through art, and non formal methods was chosen for this project. A diverse group of artists with distinct background and areas of interest collaborated together within a week. This was achieved not only through discussions, role plays, and presentations, but also through working on separate small projects and presenting the results at the exhibition to public audience. Overall, activities and methods used to carry out those activities in this project created a safe space to discuss sensitive subjects and gave incentive to participants to come up with open minded solutions. In this regard, sharing knowledge and experiences among participants played a crucial role.
