Architecture & Design – a non-formal youth education in Museums
Date du début: 8 août 2016, Date de fin: 7 janv. 2017 PROJET  TERMINÉ

ContextDespite the fact that we remain everyday in contact with architecture and we move in urban space, we often see them as merely functional. The youngsters do not understand our surroundings, they cannot decode them, read them, or assess them. As a result, there is a reluctance to take responsibility for the space around us. This situation may lead also to the buildings, squares, and entire quarters left unappreciated, degraded, abandoned, and decrepit. This problem pertains mostly to Modernist architecture, which is not valued by society as highly as the architecture of earlier centuries. Not all of the young society understands and has the ability to assess the surroundings, including the authorities who do not prevent the degradation of the “unwanted” architecture, do not take sufficient care of the aesthetics of the city, and make decisions about demolitions or redevelopment of valuable objects. In Europe, there are numerous institutions and organisations that work to change this situation. They implement education projects on architecture, disseminate knowledge about it, promote its artistic and aesthetic values.Aim and content“The Architecture & Design – a non-formal youth education in Museums” project aims to design new methods in architectural education, make the way for the exchange of experience and increase of competence and the development of the staff of the Gdynia City Museum and Architecture and Design Centre ArkDes in Stockholm dealing with education in architecture, design and urban space. Both Gdynia City Museum and ArkDes plan to implement the results of the project into their educational programmes. As a result the project also aims to develop the future cooperation between the partners.First 2 education officers from the Architecture and Design Centre ArkDes in Stockholm will take part in study visit in Gdynia City Museum (September 2016). Then 3 education officers from Gdynia City Museum will take part in study visit in Architecture and Design Centre ArkDes in Stockholm (October 2016).As a result, based on their experience, the participants will design new educational methods pertaining architecture. New methods will be used while preparing new educational offer (workshops) in both institutions. The project also aims to develop the future cooperation between the partners.ResultsDesigning new educational methods pertaining architecture and increase of the competence of the partnership institutions’ staff will allow for the improvement of educational offer to the expectations of the youth audience. Implementing new methods in architectural education will result in the change in the way the audience perceives architecture and urban space. Effective action in education and the promotion of values of architecture will raise the awareness and knowledge among the members of young society. The project will contribute to the increase of social awareness and the improvement of the quality of life of the young citizens (e.g. through preparing them to receipt the values of architecture; giving the competences to assess the surroundings; stopping the ongoing degradation of buildings and urban spaces).
