The fact that Poland belongs to the group of highly-developed countries requires continuous socio-economic development of new EU member countries, including Poland. As a result, it has become obvious that an individual’s vocational potential includes not only the theoretical knowledge gained at school, but also all their practical skills, attitudes, character traits and physical features, which determine their usefulness at work. Nowadays, employers are looking for educated and experienced workers, consciously developing their career paths and caring for their personal development in multiple areas. The development of school in the global information society is increasingly based not only on the current knowledge resources and access to them, but also on the teachers’ professional competence matching their personal and vocational profile.
The teaching profession is among the oldest in the world, dating back to Antiquity, refined and transforming over the centuries. Modern education is becoming a necessary condition for the development of the society and the whole civilization. In order to raise their competence, teachers have to improve throughout their professional life. It is extremely important to expand the teaching skills and tools and adapt them to current realities. The following areas should be constantly modified and improved:
- conveying knowledge and experience,
- stimulating cognitive and practical activity, as well as innovative skills,
- developing values, attitudes and personality,
- developing interests, combining theory and practice,
- preparing students for rational and regular self-assessment as regards the course and results of their own work,
- organizing young people’s social life at and outside the school,
- preparing students for continuous and independent learning throughout their working career.
Expanding knowledge in the process of self-education should not be limited to one area only; teachers should take advantage of a broad range of resources. At the same time, they should have vast knowledge, many skills and a strong motivation for professional self-improvement. The aim of the project is to support individual development, create an opportunity to make conscious decisions regarding further education and learn effective time management, how to cope with stress, and create one’s own and the school’s image. The project objective is the development of the key skills, such as planning, assessing, learning, effective communication, and solving the teacher’s own and students’ problems in a creative way. The project is organized in the form of workshops, which actively involve participants and limit the traditional methods of conveying knowledge to the minimum. The method is effective due to learning by experience, the possibility to confront one’s own experience with that of other participants, compare one’s own experience with theory and test various activities in practice. The course includes classes, presentations, discussions, group work, case study and recapitulations. The participants receive course materials packages. After the course, they may consult the trainer or career advisor.
The project matches the needs of selected groups of participants, so completing the modules listed above may take different number of hours, which will depend on the complexity of the course content. The least likely is an individual composition of theme blocks as a part of the suggested modules. Course participants know what they are interested in and what kind of personal and social predispositions they posses, as well as can match them to individual vocational groups in order to take proper decisions regarding education.
The project is directed at secondary school teachers, teaching bilingual classes with a very high level of history, mathematics, chemistry and geography taught in English, and with the IB syllabus, in which the languages of instruction are English.
The training courses described above will result in the exchanges of Polish students with students from the European Union countries.
