Aeromedical Crew Resource Management-ACRM

The project partnership will develop a flight training programme for doctors and paramedics working in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) as a result of the fact that whilst medics are trained to administer medical support, they are generally not trained on how to apply their skills in airborne situations. The project will create a HEMS curriculum with a series of training modules based upon an analysis of current training needs. Training modules will cover topics such as emergency manipulation of a helicopter, crew communication, behaviour & cooperation, air rescue techniques and technical training (in a range of factors - from navigation to risk assessment). Given the demands upon medics' time, learner-based training methods will be employed by the project. Training materials will also be offered that can simulate flight situations as in-flight training is not feasible. The developed tools will be tested in all partner countries through Higher Education programmes, following which their success will be evaluated and any necessary relevant changes made. Modules will be developed as computer-based training and learning tools making use of an e-learning platform. To this end, a website and DVD will be developed to host the training tools and will be used to promote the end project results. English will be used as the language for communication throughout the project. A training of trainers programme will be further developed in order to facilitate the harmonisation of HEMS training across the participating partner countries with the long term goal of the project being to establish a European Training Centre for Airborne Rescue.
