Two scouting groups on one big international adventure. The Belgian scouting group from Peer with 11 participants and 2 leaders are travelling to Sweden to go on international exchange with 10 participants and 2 leaders of the Swedish Scouting group KFUM Norrköping Scout. What the participants have in common is that they are: scout-minded, have an open mind, want to mean more for the world and carry about the world. From Sunday to Sunday two different scout groups will go on one adventure as one group with these themes: Intercultural/intergenerational education and (lifelong)learning & environment and climate change.
The participants of the scouting group in Belgium came up with the idea to go on international group exchange. They like not ‘just traveling' but they wanted to get more out of it. In the search for a partner, the Swedish scouting group was very enthusiastic and motivated candidate to cooperate with. Two mutual interesting points were found to work around (see themes above). It was a camp where participants enlarged their boundaries and where they learned things that they will carry the rest of their lives.
The first days, getting to know each other was the main part. The participants had already made a poster to present themselves to each other on a creative way. During the project in Sweden, we got to know each other in a cottage in the woods of Sweden with a typical Swedish lunch. All back to nature, out of the normal context, the participants got attention for each other with name games, hobby games, cultural exchange games… When they were a bit used to each other and the first connections were made, the second and even more challenging part began.
The next part of our adventure took place in Mela, a camping place next to a lake. The trip to Mela was all by foot, an excellent trip to talk to each other in an informal way in nature. They had to help each other, divide the weight of the food, find their way to Mela to get there with a compass. In Mela, the themes were central. The start in Mela existed out of making their living place: putting up tents, making banks to eat on… This was good proof of how well they can work together already. Activities organized to focus on intercultural/intergenerational education and (lifelong)learning are: workshops as worst prejudices workshop, cooking workshop, teambuilding activities etc. The focus on environment and climate change was already brought in by letting them survive at a camping place all in nature. Besides that, we went for an adventurous high rope walking, ecological cooking, swimming in lakes, canoeing, quiz about climate change and how to handle ourselves better, around the camp fire… Adventures and challenges for everyone!
The last, and definitely not the least part of the trip, was in Norrköping, the home basis of the Swedish scouts. Here the life of the Swedish people got clear and the contrast between city and nature was observed. We visited the Kolmården zoo: Scandinavia's largest Wildlife Park. The end of this camp existed of a goodbye dinner outside with local people where the participants showed what they had done and learned that week.
Then the hard part of saying goodbye between this freshly friendships arrived... Unforgettable friends for life!
By evaluating and focusing on the group and individuals, with the help of the Youth Pass, we tried to make an optimal learning environment for the participants. Outcomes as: better communication, break limits of speaking English, get more insight of the depth of cultures (and not only the stereotypes), self-knowledge, group work, ecological awareness etc. were experienced by the participants. We even put two articles in the newspaper of Belgium with our adventure: one in the newspaper and one in the Scouting magazine! Long term benefits for the participants can be: the motivation to improve the outcomes of the camp, the motivation to get more involved in intercultural environments, the stimulating of taking care of nature and trying to take care for the nature in the own way of living…
A week full of scouting fun, nature, non-formal and informal learning with enough time to reflect. It was an unforgettable experience for every single participant.
