A MILE IN MY SHOES: TOOLS FOR FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION AND BUILDING MORE INCLUSIVE SOCIETY

Europe has been facing one of the biggest crises of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers since long time ago. Thousands of refugees daily enter Europe, coming mostly from Middle East, in search of better life. These people go through number of situations that most of us can’t even imagine. Also, many times we are not properly informed about this topic. Information that we get from mainstream media creates image of these people that can be misleading. We believe that this affects young people in a negative way. They don’t get a (real) chance to understand the situation and this makes them more likely to accept prejudices and stereotypes which, in the end, leads to discrimination. What we want to achieve with our project is giving people an opportunity to see wider image of the situation and to build their own opinion about it. This would be a small step towards fighting discrimination and building more inclusive society. To achieve this, we planned, together with our partners from 4 different European countries (all with very much dynamic situations when it comes to immigrants) , a project called “A mile in my shoes: tools for fighting discrimination and building more inclusive society”.During preparation phase of the project we defined the activity (its main goals, timetable, its venue and foreseen dates), we found partners and signed activity agreements with them. After the project is approved we will continue with preparation phase. Role of our partners will be very important in this phase as they are in charge of selecting participants for the activity. For example, Klub putnika, as our partner in Serbia, will have the key role in dealing with looking for and purchasing tickets for participants, arranging accommodation and venue of the activity, communication with local people who will be included in the activity and local institutions that we will visit. The activity will take place in Serbia, in February, 2016. It is envisioned as a Training course for 19 young people (18+) from 5 different European countries. The main objective of the TC is providing its participants with theoretical and practical knowledge about current refugee’s situation in Serbia, Europe and in the world, and providing them with tools for understanding this problem, for fighting discrimination and building inclusive society. Through workshops, lectures, interactive presentations and discussions hosted by experts on the subject, young people will learn about different approaches to this situation which will hopefully inspire them to act and to share their knowledge. We will present to them set of tools for achieving this. Firstly, we will present Human Library, as a worldwide accepted tool for fostering dialogue to combat discrimination and promote diversity. We will provide them with all the necessary knowledge of preparing, implementing and evaluating the event of Human Library. They will use gained knowledge to organize a small HL event with refugees from one center for asylum seekers in Serbia. Idea is to share stories of these people, not only with our participants, but with local community, in order to gain better understanding of their situation. Secondly, we will present them the concept of guerrilla marketing actions, as a way of promoting positive values and raising awareness of problems in one society. We will encourage participants to also organize, at least one, guerrilla action during our activity, but also to think about different ways of fighting discrimination that can be implemented during activity or the whole project, and hopefully in the future, in their own local community.During ten days of activity, participants will gain or improve their personal and professional competences, they will be given different opportunities to learn and to make positive changes in themselves, in their local community but also on wider, international area. Our partners will play key role in dissemination of activity’s products and results, as we will encourage them to share it within their community but also to support future activities of young people in this field.
