A 'Flipped Course' on EU

The proposed module will be designed as a blended course that utilizes the flipped classroom approach that promotes innovation in teaching. The course is designed as a new first year course at the BA level, which will be entitled GE 1XX Introduction to EU. This course aims to examine the history of the European integration process; to analyse the institutions of the European integration; and to introduce students to different theoretical outlooks of the European integration. The proposed course will be offered within the framework of general education (GE) course elective list. All of the programs in the university have to include a certain percentage of GE courses into their curriculum. GE courses aim to introduce students from different faculties and programs to common issues in humanities and sciences, e.g. providing basic mathematical skills to social science students or introducing engineering students to history of world civilizations. So far, a general education course on the European Union has been missing in this curriculum. Thus this proposal aims to foster European studies by introducing students from different faculties into European Union, adding a European dimension to their studies. The proposed model of instruction (Blended course with a flipped classroom design) enables more students from different majors to enroll in this course as a General Education elective. By transferring one third of the learning workload to online platforms, this approach creates more flexibility while offering a versatile menu of learning and assessment activities. It allows the students to learn in their own time and the instructors to deploy an instructional strategy and resources that places a higher order cognitive demand on the students, since it engages the students with more creative, evaluative and analytical exercises.
