The work proposed here focuses on understanding the evolution and structural style of sedimentary basins and passive margins in 3 dimensions (3D) using state-of-the-art computational modelling techniques. Very few 3D models exist that follow the evolution of rifting to large deformation with sufficient resolution to resolve individual fault and shear zones. We will use state-of-the-art finite element techniques developed in collaboration with research partners in Canada and France to model the 3D evolution of sedimentary basin and passive margin formation. Insight into the 3D structural evolution of these systems is both a fundamental first order scientific problem but is also highly relevant for hydro-carbon exploration, as well as for understanding seismic hazard potential in these settings. The proposed project is part of the larger goal of establishing a Computational Geodynamics laboratory at the University of Bergen. The project will continue ongoing collaboration with research partners in Canada and France and will facilitate knowledge transfer from leading groups in the field (Geodynamics Groups at Dalhousie and Rennes University) to the host University. Significant expertise exists within the host University on observational aspects of sedimentary basins and passive margins, and on computational science and high performance computing, which both will be of direct benefit to the proposed project. Marine Sciences is one of the strategic areas of Bergen University. The Bergen Centre of Computational Science hosts one of the main supercomputer centres in Norway and associated expertise on high performance computing. The computational modelling techniques require use of substantial computer facilities. The proposed funds will be directed towards new computational infrastructure in order to guarantee preferred access to the hardware, and towards facilitating international collaboration and presentation of results at international meetings.
