The purpose of the project was to prepare primary teachers, such as myself, for the introduction of 1 + 2 languages in the primary setting. I wanted to increase my knowledge of French, confidence using the language and I also wanted practical tips about how to teach French in an effective and interesting way at different primary stages. There were 16 participants from Fife as well as a further 20 or so teachers from around the UK. During the course we were immersed in the language and culture of France. We did morning and afternoon classes each day where we spoke in French with only the bare minimum of English being used. We covered a wide variety of topics, including the French alphabet, French schools, cross curricular lessons including maths and festivals in France. During the week we went on cultural visits which really helped us to understand French life. We went on a bus tour around Lyon and we did a quiz where we had to go around asking the people of Lyon questions about their city. We also went out for meals to traditional French restaurants. I came back from France feeling like I had a real understanding of what life was like in France. I felt much more confident speaking in French and I had lots of ideas that I could try with my class. Now with my new class I am doing a topic about France, where we are studying French culture, doing map work and translating French stories into English and vice versa. We are planning to have a French café and invite parents. I would not have felt that I had the understanding or experience to do this topic before my trip. I feel much more prepared and able to cope with the advent of 1 + 2.
