1. What

We aim to implement a 24-months-long project PERIOD Empowerment that seeks to ignite the menstrual movement worldwide. Through project’s activities, we seek to explore alternative Menstruation Education models in a youth perspective to improve young people's participation in menstruation advocacy and be part of the conversation.

The proposed models are to be based on: youth empowerment, community capacity building and menstruation advocacy and awareness; which are practical and outstanding non-formal learning approach to developing project into dynamic activities in such a way that knowledge, skills and attitudes are learned and perfected through practice.

Thus, the project shifts a spotlight to youth organisations focusing on menstruation education operating in a grey area, existing somewhere between where the government leaves off and where the civil society and private sector stop short in changing the attitudes and behaviours around Periods. Hence, we seek to develop new narratives to address the negative perceptions and prejudices our societies hold against periods.


2. Why

The equality between men and women is at the core of values of the European Union and enshrined in its legal and political framework. The European Union Gender Action Plan, Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: Transforming the Lives of Girls and Women through European Union External Relations 2016-2020, reiterates the European Union commitment to breaking the vicious cycle of gender discrimination.

The EU aims at a world where the rights of girls and women are claimed, valued and respected by all, and where everyone is able to fulfil their potential and contribute to a more fair and just society for all. Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, but it is also crucial to accelerating sustainable development. It has been proven time and again, that empowering women and girls has a multiplier effect, and helps drive up economic growth and development across the board.


3. To achieve
The project derives its motivation from youth who set out to make a difference by tackling the most pressing Periods stereotypes; yet, face challenges in meeting the knowledge, skills, attitudes and capacities required to lead sustainable menstruation initiatives to effectively educate, advocate and serve vulnerable communities.

Thus, the project outputs and outcomes aim to establish a Global Menstrual Network which through community empowerment, community capacity building and community led initiatives shall continue to educate about and advocate for Periods and serve those who are vulnerable.


4. Objectives

Serve: we are all about action. With the support of generous partners, sponsors and individuals, we will create Period Charters in each partner country to deliver period packs to those in need; living in vulnerable situation.

Educate: it starts with changing the way we talk about periods. We will elevate the issue to eliminate the taboo through a network of high school, college and community chapters.

Advocate: we aim at raising awareness and create change through events, campaigns and media relationships; repeal the tampon tax and lobby for menstrual products in public places.


5. Proposed activities
5. 1. Kick-off Conference
Preliminary planning visit to formally finalize the project activities and program. The established project team participate in the kick-off conference.

5. 2. Desktop research
Each partner shall conduct a research on the problem of menstruation education at local and national level: national context, relevant legislation, estimates of prevalence and incidence of Periods issues, causes, universal and selective program based on areas and groups risk, health consequences of social exclusion, statistics, etc.

This activity will be carry out and implemented with the support from local partners or institutions involved in menstruation education.

  • Results: At least 8 activities (1 for each organization), 60 informed participants with new knowledge, skills and attitudes towards Periods and the role of menstruation education in young people social, cultural and professional development.

5. 3. Public Forum
The risks, protective factors, languages, cultures and social behaviours around Periods and menstruation education are found in the homes, the school, and the community; partners will use desktop research data to address the challenges, needs and gaps around Periods and menstruation education through participants testimonies or stories.

  • Results: At least 8 public forums (1 for each organization), 120 informed participants in the project from the partner’s local community.

5. 4.  PERIOD Empowerment Campaigns
Menstruation education falls into the EU gender action plan, gender equality and women's empowerment, meant for everyone in a school, a community, or a similar group and aim to reduce and challenge negative narratives towards periods and menstruation education with well-coordinated components for the individual, family, school, media, and community.

  • Results: create information materials, brochures, calendars, leaflets, awareness activities at the community level (street campaigns and online campaign for 2 months. At least 8 activities in deprived areas with vulnerable groups, and educational activities in schools.

5. 5. International training courses
During the project lifetime, we will host 3 training courses for youth workers, educators, teachers and youth in the field of Menstruation Education for good practice and exchange experience.

  • Results: each training course will bring together 30 participants to enhance their experience on menstruation education.

5. 6. PERIOD Empowerment Conference
During the project lifetime, we will host two PERIOD Empowerment Conferences.  

  • Results: bring together 100 participants: 50 local participants, 42 international participants and 8 group leaders. These include students, disadvantaged young people from areas of high risk (young people with fewer opportunities).
