In Ireland 44,000 are living with dementia and in N Wales 12,000 suffer. With an ageing population this trend will rise. Businesses in general and businesses specifically supporting the needs of older people need more support to recognise the people currently at risk and prepare for the future.NeuroSKILL aims to develop new training courses and technologies to increase the skills of the health care sector: small businesses such as general practitioners, radiology and nuclear medicine practices, hospitals, telemedicine sector, patient care sector, and policy development in both countries.The project, named NeuroSKILL, aims to increase capacity and business support for the use of neuroimaging in health care sector by delivering on the following 4 objectives:• The production of training and skills provision to increase capacity, knowledge and expertise regarding neuroimaging techniques in dementia for specialist staff, clinicians, radiographers and other allied professionals within North Wales and the North East of Ireland. This will increase the competitiveness of cross-border region as it will increase capacity in using neuroimaging technologies for diagnostics and patient care.• Development of innovative techniques for utilisation of neuroimaging information by health care professionals. Current state of the art of neuroimaging data for clinical use are descriptive; this objective will enable development of innovative quantitative measures that increase the level of information from currently obtained data that is now only accesible only as a research tool.• The production of information frameworks and guidelines regarding the use of neuroimaging in dementia in the border regions to support businesses involved in information delivery - telemedicine providers, software producers, technology suppliers - and those that stand to directly benefit - the assisted care industry, SMEs dealing with older populations and rural general practices, • The development of a website with a portal for patients and their carers along with a parallel portal for health professionals to provide increased knowledge and awareness of the diagnosis, treatment and living with dementia. Training opportunities for health care businesses in rural areas are very limited and this objective will enhance the access of these businesses (GP practices, health care practitioners) to the latest training opportunities and further enhance the capability of the regions.This project will integrate, in a sustainable way, the latest learning technologies, communication technologies, medical developments and technologies to enhance the skills of the health care sector that is critical to the economic and social development of the Ireland Wales region.
