Let's make books come alive

The idea about the project Let’s Make Books Come Alive was provoked by the alarming tendency that a lot of students in Europe encounter difficulties in reading, comprehending and composing texts. Teachers from six European schools put their efforts into finding really applicable practices in order to change this tendency. In the course of the project the students were presenting their favourite books from the national and world literature by means of different arts (words, fine art, music, drama, dance), ICT. Thanks to their work on the project, the students have re-discovered the good book and they have also improved their skills in reading, comprehending and composing texts. They have gained knowledge and competency that will be useful for their future realization. As a result of the project, the students have developed their imagination and artistic talents as well as their English language competencies. They have realised the value of the European diversity. During the planned workshops, the teachers exchanged experience and worked out strategies to overcome the problems they meet in their practice. There were six workshops: • Why Children Dislike Reading Books • Motivation for Reading as a Process of Forming Interest, Attitude and Desire • Methods and Techniques in Teaching Used to Achieve Success and Satisfaction • Can Films and TV Series Encourage Students to Read • Reading Comprehension in Terms of Bilingualism• Drawing Conclusions About the Meaning of Unfamiliar Words Using the Context The exchanged pedagogical practice and experience have improved the quality of teaching and encouraged the teachers to continue developing professionally. The project’s final products are: Virtual Book, leaflet, poster, booklet, CD1 and CD2 with good pedagogical practices and students’ work. They are all in English, the working language of the project, which allows their wide application, easy dissemination and long-time use.
